SAFARI  in Nepal

Terai

Teraï is the nepali region of the largest plain of the Gange which covers a part of Northen India. Its altitude is between 60m to 300m. The climate in terai is sub-tropical. The most comfortable season to go there is from the month of Novembre till March. Malaria raged the Terai region up till the 1960’s which refrained the nepalese to live their except for the Tharu ethny who apparently seemed rather resistant to the deadly disease.
It is in the year of 1954 that an anti-malaria campaign began, they sprayed insectides, drained pond and did an agric clearance, leaving few fertile areas now known as the National Parks of Chitwan and the National Park of Bardia. The absence of hilly landscape facilitates the making of roads helping an economical development for the region and the rest of Nepal.
Rapidly, Terai was populated by men and women from the surrounding hillsl looking for agricultural lands that are rare in their native area.
The Tharus are said to be the first habitants of the Terai regionn coming from the planes of the Gange and Rajasthan. They live on sustainable farming, hunting and fishing. Their houses are made of clay and the frame itself is made of silos in which are conservated their food provisions.
Other ethnic groups can be seen in the Terai region; Denuwar, Koche and populations coming from the neighbouring country, India.
Terai has see the Bhudda born in the city named Lumbini 562 Before Christ as wass as Sita, Rama’s wife who is the hero of the Ramayana.

To get to the Terai
By the Road

  • From Kathmandu
The first road that joined Kathmandu to an international world bring us to the Terai and Hetauda. Splendid view point of the himalayas at halfway. From the ‘classic’ road that follows the Trisuli river and goes by Mugling.

  • From Pokhara
By a very badly maintained road that brings us to Terai and Butwal ( about 5 hours for the 90 Km by private car !) it does however give you the chance to visit an old capital of a kingdom named Tamsen. However once in Terai the roads are very good.

By Plane
Flights from Kathmandu to Bharatpur, Biratnagar or Nepalganj.
