Introduction and Map to Tibet.
Lhassa
The capital of Tibet, The holy city. The Potala, palace
of the Dalai Lama built in the 18th century. The monastery of
Drepung, founded i n 1416 in which lived more than 10,000
people. The Jokang temple built during the 7th century by
Songtsen Gompo, the most sacred location in Tibet. The famous
tibetan medicine hospital.
Shigatse
The second city of Tibet. The Tashilumpo is located there which
happens to be the monastery city of the Panchen Lama.
Gyantse
Architectural city , typically Tibetan. An immense chorten of
Kumbum and the monastery of Palkor with some of the most
beautiful Tibetan artworks.
The Caves of
Milarepa
Milarepa ( 1040-1123) the holy and most admired poet of Tibet
retired in these caves. Pilgrimage in the caves is considered as
one of the most holy pilgrimage in Tibet. The beauty of the site
sweeps you away to a few centuries back.
Ganden
The most ancient monastic university of Tibet. Its origin is from
the order of the Gelugpas.
Shakya
This monastery was constructed in 1073. It is here that the son of
Gengis Khan created the first religious government in the whole
of Tibet.
Samye
Built between 765 and 780 it was the first buddist monastery of
Tibet. It is built like a Mandala.
Tsurphu
The main monastery for the sect of the Karmapas, heirs of Milarepa,
the bigges of the holy poets.
Tsetang
Fortress of Yumbulakhang , the most ancient of Tibet.
The Kingdom of Guge
The location of the very first artistic movement having its
origins from Kashemir and India. Its capital is Tsaparang, one
of the most powerful sites of Tibet. Tholing, built in the 5th
century was one of the most important monastic complex in the
West of Tibet.
Mount Kailash
A holy location for 4 religious; Buddhism, Hinduism, Bon, Janaism.
It is the source of 4 of the biggest rivers in Asia also there
is the Manasarovar lake.
Nam Tso Lake
A turqoise lake , the most holy lake in Tibet. Situated at
an altitude of 4718m. The Nyemchen mountain chain with its
highest peak at 7088m dominates the lake. Perfect for the
ornithologists , the lake itself is breath-taking.
The North Route
Road to go to Lhatse, the kingdom of Guge passing by a region of
great holiness and by the lake of Dawa Tso.
The Everest
Le sommet du monde présente un aspect inhabituel depuis le plateau
tibétain et parait très proche.
The Tibetan Population
We shall admire their pilgrimage to the Mount Kailash or around
the Barkor in Lhassa, seduced by their joy at the market of
Shigatse.
